Jamie Butterworth: The Essential Information on the Gardeners' World Star
Jamie Butterworth is a horticulturalist, garden designer and TV presenter best known as a regular contributor to BBC Two's Gardeners' World. He also appears on ITV's Love Your Weekend and as part of the BBC Two evening team covering the RHS Chelsea Flower Show alongside Monty Don, Arit Anderson and Rachel de Thame. Represented by The Soho Agency, he is widely described as one of horticulture's most engaging new voices.
Who is Jamie Butterworth?
Butterworth trained with the RHS at Wisley before building his career across garden design, nursery work and broadcasting. He gained early hands-on experience working with garden designers and the public at a nursery in Hampshire. At 21 he became a Young RHS Ambassador, according to Form Plants, the nursery he went on to found.
His book What Grows Together: Fail-safe Plant Combinations for Every Garden is a Sunday Times Best Seller, which gives you a sense of how quickly he has built a public profile.
What RHS shows has he won gold medals at?
Butterworth has won gold medals at three RHS shows. He took his first at the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show in 2019, followed by a gold at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival in 2021. His Chelsea gold came in 2022, for the Place2Be Securing Tomorrow Garden, a design created in support of the mental health charity Place2Be.
What is his connection to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show?
Chelsea is clearly the show that matters most to him. "For me, as a plantsman, Chelsea is the Greatest Show on Earth, and to be part of the BBC coverage is a life's ambition," he told Gardens Illustrated.
In 2025 he collaborated with Monty Don and BBC Radio 2's Jo Whiley to create The RHS and BBC Radio 2 Dog Garden at Chelsea, described at the time as a Chelsea first. The project brought together two of horticulture's most recognisable faces for a garden designed with dogs in mind.
Where else does he appear on TV?
Alongside Gardeners' World, Butterworth appears regularly on ITV's Love Your Weekend. His presenting work covers both the practical, plant-focused content that suits Gardeners' World and the broader lifestyle format of ITV's weekend programming. His nursery, Form Plants, sits alongside the TV work rather than being replaced by it.
